(UN)NATURAL STUDY

This project was completed as part of a residency at Atelier Circulaire and consists of photo-lithographic prints of venomous plants combined with human reproductive organs.  The titles of these pieces were produced by a name generator which combined the original plant name with the reproductive organ, to create a fictional plant species.  This body of work is inspired by the Merian botanical guide, with an interest in the role that women played in the history of floral painting. Historically, women were limited to still life painting and as a result excelled in scientific areas such as the study of botany – yet, still remained limited in their practices.  For instance, women were discouraged from learning about plant reproduction, due to a fear that they would learn immoral lessons from nature's example.
